Recently toppled and removed monuments during the protests in Virginia, Boston, Alabama, Bristol, Antwerp, and other cities motivate us to discuss the future of memorials. What are monuments for? What is next in the ethics of commemoration? Manisha Sinha will share her scholarship on the history of Confederate monuments and flags from the perspective of the current debates; Esra Akcan will present her research on transitional justice memorials around the world; and Mwanzaa Brown will talk about his thesis on the physical remnants of black heritage in Harlem, New York. The Q&A will be moderated by Cornell-NOMAS.
